A discipline that unites sport, imagination, and historical recreation
Softcombat is a recreational combat activity in which participants use simulated weapons made of soft, safe materials with the goal of avoiding injury, while still being useful for practicing attack, defense, and strategy techniques within established rules.
This discipline combines elements of sport, acting, and fantasy, making it closely related to medieval fantasy, video games, anime, role-playing games, and historical reenactments.
Many people use equipment inspired by knights, warriors, Vikings, samurai, or fictional characters to create combat scenarios that evoke worlds of fiction.

Softcombat weapons: swords, daggers, axes, spears, and shields
Softcombat weapons seek to reproduce the appearance of historical or fantasy weapons, but are designed to be used in safe encounters, which is why they are typically manufactured with a sturdy inner core, usually made of light materials like flexible fiber, covered with padded foam and other soft coatings that reduce impact.
Softcombat swords are the most well-known weapons. There are models inspired by medieval swords, Japanese katanas, fantasy weapons, or designs from video games and anime; they usually combine a lightweight structure with a padded outer area that allows for combat without using metal or dangerous materials.
Softcombat daggers are smaller versions intended for fast and agile fighting styles and can be used as a primary weapon in some combat scenarios or as a complement alongside a sword or shield.
Softcombat axes and hammers are usually related to medieval fantasy and video game or role-playing game warriors, and although they may have large and eye-catching visual designs, their impact zones are made with foam or other soft materials.
Spears allow for the representation of combat styles based on distance and frequently appear in historical reenactments and team battles.
Finally, shields are used to block attacks and complete the equipment of many combatants, and they are usually manufactured with lightweight materials, foam, or padded structures.

Types of Softcombat encounters
Sporting softcombat: rules and competition
Sporting softcombat is the modality closest to a competitive discipline, and its matches follow specific rules, scoring systems, and norms that establish which hits are valid.
In this modality, technique, speed, strategy, and defensive ability are of great importance, and even though the weapons are padded, participants must control their movements and respect rules to maintain safety during encounters.
The Regulations of the Spanish Softcombat Federation (Concilio de Herreros) establish that:
- Hits must be marked without applying excessive force. Impacts made with too much intensity can be considered brutality and penalized.
- Valid impact zones depend on the type of weapon.
- The head and neck are not valid impact zones, nor are the hands holding the weapon.
- Physical contact is not permitted, nor is grabbing the opponent, their weapons, or their equipment.
- Weapons must meet specific safety requirements, and the regulations establish characteristics they must meet to be used in competition; additionally, it is provided that weapons and shields pass a safety test conducted by referees before the tournament.
- The scoring system depends on the type of weapon and the combat modality.
Interpretive or role-playing softcombat: fighting within a story
Interpretive or role-playing softcombat adds a narrative element to the combat.
In this modality, participants not only use weapons but also portray characters within a story or a fantasy setting; thus, a medieval warrior, an explorer, a samurai, or a character inspired by a video game can be part of an adventure where the combat is an extension of the story itself.
This modality is common in live-action role-playing events and gatherings related to fantasy worlds.
Historical reenactment: encounters inspired by the past
Historical reenactment with softcombat seeks to approach ancient times through weapons and equipment inspired by different cultures.
The Middle Ages, Vikings, or ancient Japanese warriors are some of the most common settings, and although the weapons used are not real, they attempt to preserve a historical appearance to represent combat from other eras in a safe and accessible way.

Differences between softcombat and airsoft
Although they may seem like similar activities due to the use of replicas, softcombat and airsoft have very different characteristics.
Softcombat is based on hand-to-hand combat with padded weapons such as swords, axes, daggers, or spears, and physical skill, movement, and combat technique are the primary elements.
Airsoft, on the other hand, uses replicas of firearms that shoot small plastic balls via compressed air, gas, or electric mechanisms, and its encounters have a more tactical focus and are related to military simulations.
In conclusion, softcombat is a combination of sport, fantasy, and historical recreation that allows for experiencing combat with swords and other bladed weapons inspired by fiction or the past, using materials designed to offer a safe and fun experience, whose focus can be adapted to the context and preferences of those who practice it.
