Tizona del Cid

Tizona sword of the Cid Campeador from the prestigious MARTO factory in Toledo

The Tizona del Cid is an ancient sword that has been ennobled by Spanish tradition and literature, becoming an iconic figure in the country's history. This sword (along with the Colada) is attributed to Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as the Cid Campeador, who was a Castilian knight and historical figure during the Reconquista. El Cid Campeador was born in the mid-11th century and was educated alongside Infante Sancho, son of King Ferdinand I of Castile and León, who named him royal standard-bearer in 1065. Over time, El Cid came to dominate practically the entire eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, embodying the prototype of a knight with the highest virtues. The Tizona was obtained by El Cid after defeating King Búcar of Morocco in Valencia, according to the "Cantar de Mío Cid". Later, he gave it to the Infantes de Carrión as part of the payment for the wedding with his daughters.

The Tizona is mentioned for the first time in the Cantar de Mío Cid, where it is called Tizón. This name comes from the Latin "titio", which is a synonym for ember or burning log. In 1503, Gonzalo de Bricio made an inventory of the weapons that were in the Alcázar of Segovia, and among them the Tizona is described.

Fray Prudencio de Sandoval, in his chronicle of the Kings of Castile and León, mentions the Tizona, which is owned by the Marquises of Falces and which was given to him by King Ferdinand the Catholic as a reward for his services, on the condition that he take it to the Palace for the Kings of Spain to swear an oath.

In 1936, the sword disappeared from its home with the documents of granting and legitimation. The Tizona reappeared after the Civil War in the castle of Figueras in 1939 and was transferred to the Army Museum in Madrid. It was later acquired by the Junta of Castile and Leon and helped by private donations for 1.6 million euros. The final destination of the Tizona will be the Cathedral of Burgos, where the remains of the Campeador are buried.

In tradition, the Tizona has its own personality and its strength varies depending on the arm that wields it, which terrifies the adversaries. This ancient sword was declared a Site of Cultural Interest on January 18, 2003. The Tizona is available with a gold or silver finish and is part of the exclusive collection "Historical, Fantastic and Legendary Swords" manufactured by MARTO. This sword has a certificate of quality and origin that ensures that it has been manufactured in Toledo, the cradle of Spanish swords.
