The hammer is one of the oldest Germanic attack weapons and enjoyed great popularity in the Middle Ages as a war hammer or battle hammer due to its extreme effect.
It was used in particular by cavalry in the 13th century. As steel armour grew in size and thickness, the so-called horseman's hammer proved to be extremely useful thanks to its weight and its ability to pierce and crush even heavy armour.
The raven's beak or Bec de Corbin ( English raven's beak ) is a late medieval variant of this polearm . In particular, the eponymous spike was an effective means of penetrating chain gear or breaking plate armour against well-armoured opponents.
This replica of a 14th-century Italian hammer depicts a monster with its mouth wide open. The hammer head protrudes from the beast's mouth, while the pointed, downward-bent hammer bolt represents the creature's tail. The beast (including the shaft support) is made of brass, the hammer head and mandrel are made of steel. The wooden shaft is connected to the head by rivets and ends with a brass cap.
