Medieval spurs from the 13th-15th century made of lost-wax bronze with leather straps
These
Medieval spurs made of lost-wax cast bronze
are based on
13th-15th centuries
Used by riders, knights, and servants throughout Europe. Forged in an era when riding gear meant more than just utility, spurs were not only an aid in horsemanship, but also visible signs of authority and social status.
This pair
cast in solid bronze using the lost wax process
to achieve period shape and weight. Each spur has a
Y-shaped arm
that wraps around the heel and a turned prong protruding from the neck, designed to be effective without damaging the saddle. Integrated loops at the ends are threaded with genuine leather straps, included for immediate use.
Whether you're outfitting 14th-century equipment, organizing an exhibition, or preparing for an equestrian performance, these spurs are an authentic and durable choice based on historical precedent.
Historical background
These types of spurs were widely used in medieval times, before the more articulated oarspurs became the norm. Their pointed collars allowed for subtle control during riding or battle. In chivalric tradition, spurs were awarded as a symbol of status and readiness, and removing them could be considered an act of dishonor.
Bronze spurs, prized for both their strength and decorative appeal, have been found in excavations in Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands.
Note on craftsmanship - Lost wax casting
Each spur is manufactured by the
lost wax method
(
lost wax
), an ancient casting technique known since antiquity and practiced throughout the medieval period.
The lost-wax casting process begins with a detailed wax model, carefully sculpted by hand. This model is then placed into a mold, usually made of clay or plaster. Once the mold hardens, the wax is melted and poured out, leaving behind a precise, hollow cavity.
The molten bronze
Molten bronze is poured into this space. Once cooled, the mold is broken to reveal the blank. The piece is then cleaned, and the final details are hand-polished. This traditional method allows the piece to be shaped with great precision and historical accuracy, far more than modern casting machines can achieve.
