The story of Devil May Cry is based on Mundus and Sparda, both demons and actually equally evil. 2000 years ago, Mundus, the demon king, wanted to conquer the human world. Sparda, one of his officers, however, began to feel pity for the people. He created a demon army to rebel against his king and prevent the demons from entering the human world. While his army and Mundus' army were fighting, Sparda attacked the king himself, defeated him, and threw him back into the demon world. He sealed the gate to the demon world. Sparda later bequeathed all of his forces to his two sons Dante and Virgil. Dante, a short-tempered rebel, who doesn't care about anyone's opinion but saves humanity from demon attacks, was given the powerful sword Rebellion. He also runs the demon hunter business "Devil May Cry". The true power of the Sword Rebellion can only be awakened by Dante's blood, which then changes for a short time from his human form to the demonic form, which multiplies his physical and magical powers.

Rebellion is a massive sword with a heavy, double-edged blade that is notched on both sides near the tip. The pommel is split at several points. The handle is simple, but the handguard is skeletal, with a skull-like face with a ribcage on either side where the blade emerges.
