What is a Lance used for?

In the past, lances were used by horsemen (spearmen) or for long-range combat. However, nowadays, many customers order lances to participate in artistic performances or historical and medieval events. You may be interested in visiting our Softcombat store with hundreds of replicas of armor, lances and other weapons designed for costumes.

Characteristics of war spears

War spears were characterized by the following features:

  • Length: War spears were long weapons, measuring between 2 and 4 metres in length.
  • Pole: The shaft of a war spear was made of wood or metal.
  • Head: The head of a war spear consisted of a sharp point.

Types of war spears

There are many different types of war spears, which are classified according to their shape, size, and purpose. Some of the most common types of war spears include:

  • Cavalry Lance: The cavalry lance was the most common type of lance. It was used by cavalry to attack enemies from a distance.
  • Infantry Lance: The infantry lance was a shorter type of spear that could be used by infantry.
  • Tournament Lance: The tournament lance was a special type of lance used in medieval tournaments.

The Spear as a Weapon of War

Lances were long weapons with a wooden shaft and a pointed steel head, formerly used by a horseman for charging. The lance is a polearm designed for use by a mounted warrior or cavalryman (spearman). During periods of medieval warfare, it evolved into the leading weapon in cavalry charges, and was not suitable for throwing or repeated thrusting, unlike similar weapons of the javelin or pike family typically used by infantry.
