    Medieval Castles: Fortresses Designed to Withstand Any Siege

    The gates of a castle close as the enemy army surrounds its walls; inside, there is no panic: every wall, every tower, and every imaginable defense has been designed to resist the attack against the invader. Moats, battlements, reinforced gates, and towers transform the fortress into a complex defensive machine where every element serves a purpose.

    For centuries, medieval builders combined architecture, strategy, and military engineering to create some of the most difficult structures of their time to conquer.

    1. Moats and outer obstacles: keeping the enemy away from the walls

    The castle's defense began before reaching the wall. Moats, with or without water, hindered enemy advance and made the use of siege engines difficult.
    In addition to these, natural slopes, controlled paths, and open spaces left the attacker exposed during the approach, turning reaching the walls into a test of endurance before initiating the true attack.

    2. Fortified entrances: when the gate was a trap

    The main entrance was one of the most protected points of the castle. Reinforced wooden and iron doors worked together with portcullises, large wooden or iron grilles, which could be quickly closed to block access.
    Drawbridges, barbicans, and angled gates further complicated enemy advance, forcing them to overcome several obstacles before entering.
    Some fortresses even had "killing chambers," where attackers would be trapped while defenders attacked from overhead openings known as murder holes.

    3. Walls and battlements: the first stone barrier of the fortress

    The walls were the castle's primary defense. Their thick walls were designed to withstand prolonged attacks and serve as a combat platform.
    Their height and structure could vary depending on the terrain and the most vulnerable points, even using staggered designs to improve defense.
    At the top were the battlements, serrated stone structures, which consisted of merlons, raised blocks of stone that protected soldiers, and crenels, spaces or gaps between the merlons that allowed observation and firing at the enemy.
    The wall walks, passages located on top of the walls, connected the entire wall, allowing troops to be moved quickly to any attacked area, facilitating surveillance and movement.

    4. Defensive towers: the eyes and strong points of the castle

    Towers reinforced the fortress's defense by expanding vision and attack capability.
    There were several types that fulfilled different functions, for example, flanking towers projected from the walls, allowing shots at approaching enemies and eliminating blind spots, while watchtowers controlled the territory, detected threats, and transmitted signals.
    In the center of the defense stood the keep, the castle's last refuge and the place from which resistance was organized.

    5. Defensive windows: small openings turned into weapons

    Castle windows were not designed for illumination, but for defense, and were strategically placed to allow attack from cover: arrowslits, loopholes, and gun loops were narrow openings in the stone that allowed arrows, crossbow bolts, and primitive weapons to be fired while keeping the soldier protected.
    Their design, wider on the inside and narrower on the outside, offered a greater firing angle without exposing the defender. Some could even be closed with stone blocks during a siege to reinforce protection.

    Reaching the wall did not mean being safe. Machicolations, stone balconies with openings in the floor, allowed direct attack on enemies immediately below, by throwing stones, hot liquids, or other objects, and even shooting at them from a protected position.
    Before these, hoardings and wooden defensive platforms were used to increase attack capacity.
    Walkways and elevated positions completed a system that allowed control of the wall without losing protection.

    7. Stairs and internal circulation: architecture designed to defend

    The danger for invaders continued even inside the castle. Spiral staircases, uneven steps, narrow corridors, and interior doors were designed to slow down the enemy and favor those familiar with the fortress.
    Each section could become an independent defensive point, transforming the advance towards the towers into a series of small battles where architecture was as important as weapons.

    8. Secret passages and hidden exits: the castle's invisible routes

    Not all accesses to a castle were visible. Some fortresses had secret posterns, escape doors, and underground passages that connected to the outside.
    These routes allowed messages to be sent, supplies to be brought in, important people to be evacuated, or surprise attacks to be launched against an enemy who believed the fortress was completely isolated.

    9. Water and survival during a siege: resisting when everything was blocked

    A castle had to be able to survive for months without outside help and for this it had wells, cisterns, and water storage systems, as well as pantries and storerooms with food such as cereals and salted meat.
    These resources allowed the garrison to be maintained and resist while the enemy remained outside the walls without needing to leave the fortress in search of new provisions.

    A medieval castle had to function like a small city during a siege. Storerooms, kitchens, workshops, and sanitation systems allowed daily life to be maintained and defense sustained for long periods.
    This organization made it possible to repair weapons, preserve food, and coordinate resistance without relying on the outside, making its functioning comparable to that of a small independent city or town and increasing the chances of survival until the arrival of reinforcements or the enemy's withdrawal.
