In the Highlander universe, few weapons have achieved the iconic status of the sword of Duncan MacLeod, the protagonist of the television series that aired from 1992 to 1998.
This was a katana, notable not only for its imposing visual design but also for its symbolic weight in the narrative of an immortal warrior who has wandered through the centuries searching for meaning in his existence. A new MacLeod: Duncan, the 16th-century immortal

Duncan MacLeod was born in 1592 in the Scottish Highlands. Cousin of the legendary Connor MacLeod, he is also an immortal who, after his first "death," joins the endless cycle of mortal duels between immortals like himself.
Adrian Paul was in charge of bringing this character to life in the series Highlander: The Series , and he soon became a figure as important as Connor in the hearts of fans.

Duncan is wise, thoughtful, and a formidable fighter. Throughout the series, he faces numerous immortals in epic duels, where only decapitation can end an equal's life.
The katana he wields becomes his inseparable companion, present in every fight, every loss and every victory.

    Who designed Duncan MacLeod's sword?

His sword was specially designed for the series by the gunsmith and master forger Marto de Toledo, a renowned Spanish manufacturer.
The katana was conceived to reflect both the Japanese character of the weapon and the spiritual essence of the character.
The pommel features a meticulously sculpted dragon head, a symbol of power, wisdom, and protection. This hilt became one of the game's most distinctive features, making it easily recognizable to fans of the franchise.

    Sword Description: Lethal Elegance

Its katana has a curved, tempered steel blade approximately 70 cm long, sharp, lightweight, and durable, ideal for precise, swift cuts. The design is inspired by ancient Japanese forges, where each sword is a work of art with its own soul.
The tsuka (hilt) is wrapped in black leather for a firm grip, and the guard (tsuba) is discreet yet effective. Most notable is, without a doubt, the dragon head on the pommel, which, in addition to being decorative, reinforces the idea that this weapon is more than just a combat tool: it is a symbol of lineage, honor, and destiny.

Symbolism and transcendence in the series

In Highlander: The Series , Duncan's katana represents his moral commitment to a code of honor that not all immortals follow. Though many of his opponents seek the absolute power of the "Prize" without scruple, Duncan maintains a noble philosophy, fighting only when necessary, and protecting innocents even at the cost of his life.
It also embodies his connection to Hideo Koto, the Japanese master who taught him the philosophy of Bushido in the 18th century.
It is Koto who gives him this sword, forged by a Japanese craftsman as a symbol of the honorable warrior Duncan was destined to be. From that moment on, the katana and Duncan become inseparable.

The sword is an extension of Duncan's honor and identity, accompanying him in countless battles against other immortals. A constant reminder of the lessons learned, the friendships forged, and the battles fought.

In the Highlander universe, where "there can only be one," Duncan's katana stands as an emblem of resilience, tradition, and eternal legacy.
