Ghost in the Shell: The Exhibition was announced during Anime Expo 2025, an unprecedented exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of the iconic franchise. Featuring over 600 original materials and exclusive...
During Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, one of the most significant announcements was Ghost in the Shell: The Exhibition, the first large-scale comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the entire Ghost in the Shell franchise. This exhibition will be held at the TOKYO NODE venue in Toranomon Hills, Tokyo, from January 30 to April 5, 2026. Ghost in the Shell: The Exhibition A celebration of 30 years of cyberpunk legacy The exhibition will commemorate the series' three-decade history, offering visitors the chance to explore the Ghost in the Shell universe from its beginnings to its most recent projects. This initiative has the full collaboration of Production IG, the studio responsible for the original animation since the legendary 1995 feature film, and Science SARU, which is currently working on a new animation that will also be released in 2026. The exhibition will include more than 600 original materials, many of them never before seen. Among the objects on display are key animation drawings, backgrounds, storyboards, character sketches, and documents covering each of the franchise's adaptations: from the feature films directed by Mamoru Oshii to series such as Kenji Kamiyama's Stand Alone Complex, Kazuchika Kise's Arise, and Shinji Aramaki's SAC_2045. One of the elements that most caught the public's attention was the opportunity to compare and contrast the different visions of the cyberpunk universe offered by various directors. This makes the exhibition an immersive experience for both veteran and new fans. New productions and exclusive content The exhibition won't just focus on the past. Spaces dedicated to the new anime being prepared by Science SARU have been confirmed, offering a glimpse into where the franchise is headed in its next phase. Additionally, an official trailer for the exhibition has been released, and a previously unseen interview with director Mamoru Oshii is available, reflecting on the cultural and philosophical impact of Ghost in the Shell over time. Oshii directed the first film in 1995 and its sequel, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, in 2004, and is considered one of the creative pillars behind the success of the series. During the exhibition period, original and exclusive merchandise inspired by the different stages of the series will also be available for purchase. These limited-edition items will be available only at the TOKYO NODE venue. A global experience: The international tour is in preparation According to the organizers, Ghost in the Shell: The Exhibition will not be limited to Japan. An international tour is planned that will bring this experience to other parts of the world. Dates and cities have not yet been confirmed, but more details are expected to be revealed after the exhibition closes in Tokyo. A tribute to the evolution of anime and Japanese science fiction The exhibition represents a tribute to one of the most influential franchises in Japanese animation and global science fiction. Ghost in the Shell not only defined an era with its philosophical approach to artificial intelligence and identity, but has continued to reinvent itself with each new generation of creators. This 2026 exhibition will be a unique opportunity to relive and rediscover the universe that transformed the perception of anime around the world.
