When a person sees a figure with a large, somewhat cubist head and a small body, they are very likely to think of a Funko. These figures have become an icon of popular culture thanks to their simple and easily recognizable design.
Unlike traditional figures, they do not aim to faithfully reproduce a character, but rather to capture their essence with a unique style that today brings to life thousands of characters from movies, series, anime, comics, video games, music, and much more.
The origin of Funko
The story began in 1998, when American Mike Becker founded the company Funko with the intention of manufacturing figures inspired by classic characters from popular culture.
The first model was Big Boy, the mascot of a well-known American restaurant chain, although that figure did not yet have the appearance we associate with a Funko today; instead, it was a bobblehead, a doll with a movable head that wobbled on a spring.
The big change came in 2010, when a new concept of figure with a completely different aesthetic emerged.
The idea was very simple: to create characters with a head much larger than the body, very simple black eyes, and few facial features, so that anyone could recognize them at a glance.
What characterizes a Funko?
Funko figures stand out for the characteristics already mentioned: their disproportionately large head, small body, and simple facial features, where hair, clothing, and accessories take center stage.
Thanks to this design, they manage to represent very different characters without losing their essence, as small details like a sword, glasses, or a hat are enough to recognize them instantly.
Not all Funko figures have the same design
Although many people think that all Funko figures are the same, the reality is that there are different styles within the brand itself.
The best known are those with very large, almost square heads, which have become the most representative image of Funko. However, there are also figures with slightly rounder heads, larger models, miniature versions, and even figures with slightly more balanced proportions, though always maintaining the characteristic cartoonish style of the brand.
In addition, some figures incorporate special bases, dioramas, vehicles, lighting effects, or metallic finishes that differentiate them from the standard design.
What makes a Funko more valuable?
Not all figures have the same importance. Several factors can increase their value over time.
One of the main factors is the number of units manufactured. The more limited an edition, the harder it will be to find.
When a figure stops being produced, its availability also decreases, which influences its value.
The represented character is another crucial factor. Protagonists from well-known franchises, emblematic characters, or special versions tend to generate greater interest.
Added to all this are the condition, the presence of the original box, and, occasionally, small manufacturing errors that turn a figure into a rare piece.
Funko figure brands
Although many people use the word Funko to refer to any figure of this style, the company has actually developed different lines with their own characteristics.
The best known is Funko Pop!, which popularized the design with a large head, small body, and minimalist features that now identifies the brand worldwide.
Over the years, other lines also appeared, such as Funko Vinyl SODA, with a style inspired by old bobblehead dolls; Bitty Pop!, miniature versions of the classic design; Funko Gold, mainly dedicated to athletes and musicians with more realistic proportions; and Funko Mystery Minis, small surprise figures with a more cartoonish finish.
A design that became an icon
Few figures have managed to create such a recognizable visual identity as Funko. Just by seeing a silhouette with a disproportionately large head, oval eyes, and a small body, one can immediately identify this type of figure.
This simplicity, combined with the ability to adapt practically any character to the same style, explains why Funko has gone from being a different idea to becoming a true icon of popular culture, managing to summarize the personality of each character in an instantly recognizable figure.
