Valentine's Day in Japan
In Japan, Valentine's Day is celebrated in a unique and charming way. On February 14th, women take the initiative by giving chocolates to the men in their lives, whether in a romantic, professional, academic, or family context. For this reason, there are even different types of chocolates depending on the relationship with the person and the message one wishes to convey:
• Giri Choco, "Obligation Chocolates" or Gag Chocolates, for co-workers or classmates, the message is one of gratitude or friendship.
• Tomo Choco, or "Friendship Chocolates," meant to be enjoyed specifically by friends. They are popular among younger generations.
• Honmei Choco or "True Feelings Chocolates," are given to express love. Nowadays, homemade ones are preferred, as the giver puts their feelings into making them.
But while this day is for women to give gifts, reciprocity occurs one month later, on March 14th, during White Day.
This day has become a celebration where men honor the women who have given them gifts, returning the gesture with a variety of surprises that go beyond sweets.
